Pharmacoepidemiology

What?

The term “pharmacoepidemiology” covers a range of study types, with various aims, some are causal while others are descriptive:

  • Does treatment A affects the risk of some outcome compared to either no treatment or an alternative intervention? (Causal aim.)

  • How many start treatment A and how long do they adhere? (Descriptive aim.)

  • What is the population risk of (known) side effects of treatment A? (Descriptive aim.)

  • What is the individual risk of (known) side effects of treatment A? (Predictive aim.)
