The term “pharmacoepidemiology” covers a range of study types, with various aims, some are causal while others are descriptive:
Does treatment A affects the risk of some outcome compared to either no treatment or an alternative intervention? (Causal aim.)
How many start treatment A and how long do they adhere? (Descriptive aim.)
What is the population risk of (known) side effects of treatment A? (Descriptive aim.)
What is the individual risk of (known) side effects of treatment A? (Predictive aim.)
